Do men wear engagement rings? Some do, and nothing stops a man from wearing one. A man's engagement ring is simply the ring he wears from the proposal to the wedding. In the US it is still uncommon among the couples The Knot surveys: its 2025 Real Weddings Study of 16,956 members of The Knot and WeddingWire who married in 2024 found that only 5% of heterosexual couples exchanged two rings, against 29% of LGBTQIA+ couples.
In Sweden, both partners have traditionally worn one since the mid-1800s. The choice that matters most is what his ring turns into once a wedding band shows up.
Key Takeaway
A men's engagement ring is optional. Decide first whether his ring will become the wedding band, share a finger with it, or move to the other hand. Then pick the width, style and stone that suit that plan.
Why So Few American Men Wear Engagement Rings
In the US, the no-ring-for-him habit has a short and fairly commercial history. In 1926, US manufacturers and retail jewelers launched a campaign to sell men's engagement rings. Historian Vicki Howard, writing in the Journal of Social History in 2003, calls it an invented tradition that failed, and the custom soon dropped from view.
The groom's wedding band came later and caught on fast. Howard, citing a 1947 Fortune estimate, puts two-ring weddings at about 15% of couples at the end of the Depression and about 80% by the late 1940s. So the American pattern is recent: a men's engagement ring that flopped in 1926, then a groom's wedding band that jewelers popularized in the 1940s.
Sweden runs the other way. Nationalencyklopedin, the Swedish national encyclopedia, describes the custom since the mid-1800s as engaged couples exchanging plain gold rings, worn on the left ring finger. At the wedding, the Church of Sweden lets the couple choose whether both exchange rings or only the bride receives one. That leaves a Swedish groom free to keep wearing the band he got engaged with.
Do guys wear engagement rings today? More of them do. GIA's own guide to wearing engagement rings, published in October 2025, notes that it is becoming increasingly popular for men to wear one.
Which Finger Does a Man Wear an Engagement Ring On?
In the US, a man wears his engagement ring on the fourth finger of his left hand, the same finger as the wedding band, and GIA describes that as the traditional place for both. In Russia, Germany, Poland, Greece and India, GIA adds, it is common to wear the wedding ring on the right hand. A man marrying into one of those traditions can plan the wedding band around the right hand from the start.
Every other finger carries its own associations, and we map them one by one in our guide to which hand and finger men wear rings on. For an engagement ring, the finger question really comes down to where the wedding band will sit later.
Plan for the Wedding Before You Buy
Can men wear engagement rings and wedding bands together? Yes, and a man's engagement ring has three possible futures, each one changing what you should buy.
| Plan | What happens at the wedding | What to look for |
|---|---|---|
| One ring, both jobs | His engagement ring becomes his wedding ring. The Atlantic described men who simply have it “polished up for the big day.” | A band he will want on his hand every day for decades |
| Stack two | The wedding band joins it on the same finger. In GIA's traditional order the wedding ring goes on first and the engagement ring is worn on top. | Combined width. GIA flags sets wider than 4 or 5 mm worn together for special sizing care |
| Move it | The engagement ring shifts to the right hand to make room for the band. | Measure the right-hand finger before you order, not the left one |
Stacking is where men's rings get tricky. The bands in this guide run 10 to 14 mm across the front, so two of them together would cover roughly 20 to 28 mm of finger. If he wants to stack, keep one ring narrow and size the two as a pair.
The one-ring plan is the simplest. A carved band like our 13 mm Celtic cross band works for both jobs. The raised cross gives it enough presence for a proposal. Its polished high points against darkened recesses still read as a wedding band next to a suit cuff. Our guide to unique men's wedding bands sorts more bands by style and width.

Band, Signet, Stone or Sculpted: Four Styles Compared
A male engagement ring tends to fall into one of four broad looks. Each one wears differently on a hand that grips tools, steering wheels and handlebars.

| Style | How it reads | Watch for | From our stock |
|---|---|---|---|
| Patterned band | Quiet; the closest thing to a classic wedding band. Best for the one-ring plan | A pattern running all the way round can complicate resizing | Wave band: 10 mm, 12 g, high-shine polish |
| Signet | A personal mark on a flat face. Best for a man who wants a mark, not a stone | A broad face takes knocks first | Onyx Knight signet: black onyx, 11 × 16 mm stone face |
| Stone ring | The most traditional “engagement” look. Best when a stone is part of the moment | Softer stones show scratches first | Celtic Crown band: 14 mm, one clear CZ |
| Sculpted (skull, cross) | Personality first, tradition second. Best for a man who already wears them | A raised face sits higher off the finger | Skull Engagement Ring: 14 mm at the skull face |

Signets: The Ring That Used to Sign Things
A signet was a working tool. The Victoria and Albert Museum describes a seal ring as one used to apply the wearer's personal mark to the sealing wax on a document. That seal then stood for the document's legality and the authority or person who issued it. A signet engagement ring keeps that sense of putting your name to something.
Our black onyx Knight signet sets a genuine onyx cabochon in sterling silver and weighs 10 grams, light enough for all-day wear. For a bigger face, the Roman Numeral Cross signet measures 25 × 32 mm and weighs 25 grams.

Stones on a Man's Hand: What the Mohs Numbers Say
A ring worn every day takes knocks, so check the stone's hardness before falling for the design. These are GIA's figures for the stones you will meet on men's rings:
| Stone | Mohs hardness | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|
| Onyx | 7 | GIA notes that what many call “black onyx” is dyed black chalcedony |
| Cubic zirconia (CZ) | 8.5 | Hard and durable, though not as hard as diamond |
| Sapphire | 9 | GIA calls it suitable for everyday wear |
| Diamond | 10 | The top of the scale |
Hardness only measures resistance to scratching. GIA separates it from toughness, which is how well a gem survives an impact, so even a hard stone can chip if it takes a hard enough knock.
Sculpted Rings for Men Who Already Wear Them
If he already wears skull or cross rings, a plain band can feel like someone else's jewelry. Our skull engagement ring carries clear CZ in the eyes and along a floral scroll band, measures 14 mm at the skull face, and is solid sterling from the face through the shank. Couples who want the theme on both rings can browse the skull ring collection or our silver cross rings together.
Sterling Silver, Gold-Plated or Solid 14K?
Sterling silver is 92.5% silver and 7.5% other metals, and GIA calls it naturally softer and more susceptible to scratches and dents than white gold. On an oxidized ring, daily wear tends to polish the raised metal first while the recesses keep their dark finish, so the pattern usually gets easier to read over time.
Gold plating is a surface layer. Our Knights Templar cross ring carries 14K gold plating on the raised cross only, and its own listing warns that the gold thins with daily grip on tools and handlebars. Solid gold has no layer to wear through. A 14K mark means 58.3% gold, per GIA, and our solid 14K gold dragon ring weighs 32 grams.

Who Buys a Man's Engagement Ring?
The etiquette people usually quote is about wedding bands. The Knot describes the tradition as each partner paying for the other's band, and lists splitting the cost evenly, contributing by income, or each buying their own as modern alternatives. Couples can apply any of those to his engagement ring too.
If the ring is a surprise, the size is the hard part. GIA notes that fingers shrink in the cold and swell in the heat, so a cool-morning measurement can differ from an afternoon one. Our ring sizing guide covers four ways to measure at home. Wide bands also fit more snugly than narrow ones and usually need to be a bit larger, GIA adds, so a 14 mm ring is no place to guess.
Checklist Before You Order
Pick the plan
One ring for both jobs, a stack, or a move to the right hand at the wedding.
Measure the finger it will live on
The left ring finger for most US couples, or the right hand if that is where the ring ends up.
Check the width
The wider the band, the snugger it fits. Size wide bands with that in mind, and size a stack as a pair.
Check the stone
Look at its hardness and how well it takes a knock. Or skip the stone: a plain or carved metal band has no stone to chip.
Ask about resizing
GIA says eternity rings are very difficult to resize and pavé or channel settings cannot be resized easily. A pattern that runs all the way round deserves a question first.
Not engaged yet, but want a ring that says you are serious? That is a men's promise ring, and it follows its own rules.
