The short answer
The average ring size for men in our orders is a median of US 10.5, and the single most-ordered size is 11. That comes from 16,023 sized rings ordered from our store between December 2017 and September 2026, counting every ring not titled as a women's piece. Half of them were between size 9 and 12.5, and about a third were size 12 or larger.
Published guides disagree on this number. Brilliant Earth's men's size chart says the average falls between size 9 and 10; RingSizer.org puts the US average between 10 and 11. Our own order data lands above the first range and in the middle of the second.
These are sizes customers chose, which isn't the same as measured fingers. If you can measure, do that first — our guide to measuring ring size walks through four ways to do it at home.
Men's Ring Sizes in Our Orders, Size by Size
Sizes in the main bars run from 5 to 17, and the size 10 group is the largest at 17.2%. The bars below show every men's ring with a size that customers kept, grouped by whole size.
Men's ring sizes ordered from our store, Dec 2017 – Sep 2026 (16,023 rings not titled as women's)
Each bar holds a whole US size plus its quarter and half steps (size 10 includes 10.25 and 10.5). Sizes under 5 and 18 or over were 45 rings combined. The largest groups were size 10 (17.2%), 11 (13.3%), 12 (11.7%) and 9 (11.5%).
| Measure | Result |
|---|---|
| Median (half bigger, half smaller) | US 10.5 |
| Mean | US 10.74 |
| Most-ordered single size | US 11 (8.1% of rings) |
| Middle half of all rings | US 9 to 12.5 |
| Middle 80% of all rings | US 7 to 14 |
| Size 12 or larger | 35.0% |
| Smaller than size 9 | 23.1% |
| Median, rings whose titles name men (3,341) | US 11 |
Even the most common men's ring size in our orders, 11, covers only about one ring in twelve, and exactly 10.5 was 6.0%. What ring size do most men wear? In our data it's a range: about 8 in 10 rings were between size 7 and 14. The average ring size for men is a useful center, not a safe guess for any one man.

Did the Average Ring Size for Men Change by Country or Over Time?
It barely moved. We split the same orders two ways — by shipping address and by year — and the median stayed at 10.5 in every slice.
| Group | Rings | Median | Most ordered | Size 12+ |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shipped to the US | 10,038 | 10.5 | 11 | 35.3% |
| Shipped elsewhere | 5,985 | 10.5 | 11 | 34.7% |
| Ordered 2017–2021 | 9,574 | 10.5 | 11 | 36.3% |
| Ordered 2022–2026 | 6,449 | 10.5 | 11 | 33.2% |
The mean slipped from 10.81 to 10.63 between the two periods, and the share of size 12 and up dropped by about three points. A shipping address says where a ring went, not who wears it, so treat the country split as a rough check rather than a national average.
What Our Numbers Can and Can't Tell You
We counted ring units, not men. We can't see who wears a ring, so "men's" in this article means every sized ring not titled as a women's piece. Only about one title in five names men outright (3,341 units, 20.9%); in that group the median is 11 and the mean 10.88, a little above the full set.
One customer can order several rings, buy a gift for someone else, or size a ring for a thumb or pinky. We left out rings whose titles name them as women's pieces (309 units), lines that were fully refunded (224), canceled orders (59) and rings with no size recorded (192). Every size is on the US scale our store uses.
Our catalog leans toward heavy silver rings for riders and rock fans, and that buyer base may not match men in general. We haven't tested whether heavier rings pull the sizes up, so we won't claim it. Our best-selling ring, the Keith Richards skull ring, sold more than 1,700 sized units in this data, from size 6 all the way to 18.

Measured data on fingers does exist; it just isn't a ring-size average. Japan's National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST) published hand measurements of 327 men in which the ring finger's middle knuckle had a median circumference of 59.0 mm, with 90% of men between 54.0 and 65.0 mm. That is a knuckle measurement on Japanese adults, so it can't be turned into a US ring size for men in general.
What a US Size 10.5 Actually Measures
A ring size is a physical dimension. The international standard ISO 8653 defines it as the circumference, in millimeters, of the largest cylinder that fits inside the ring. US sizing is a trade convention rather than a formal standard, so charts differ by a fraction of a millimeter; GIA's chart steps about 0.8 mm of inside diameter, roughly 2.5 mm around, per whole size.
| US size | Inside diameter | Inside circumference |
|---|---|---|
| 9 | 19.0 mm | 59.7 mm |
| 10 | 19.8 mm | 62.2 mm |
| 10.5 | 20.2 mm | 63.5 mm |
| 11 | 20.6 mm | 64.7 mm |
| 12 | 21.4 mm | 67.2 mm |
| 12.5 | 21.8 mm | 68.5 mm |
Sizes 9 to 12.5 cover the middle half of our orders. Size 11, the one customers picked most, measures 20.6 mm across the inside.
GIA notes that different countries use different ring-size scales: the UK and Australia use letters, and Japan has its own numbers. If you're converting, go through millimeters, then check our ring size chart.
How to Guess His Ring Size When You Can't Ask Him
If you're buying for the holidays, treat the average ring size for men as the last resort, not the first. Work through these steps before you guess.
Borrow a ring he already wears
Use one from the same finger on the same hand. GIA advises telling the jeweler which hand a ring is worn on and which hand is dominant, because fingers differ.
Measure it in millimeters
Measure the inside diameter across the widest point and match it to a size chart. GIA notes that fingers shrink in the cold and swell in the heat, so a ring that fits on a summer afternoon can feel looser on a winter morning.
Allow for a wide band
GIA says rings with wide shanks usually need to be a bit larger because they fit more snugly. Our 14mm Iron Cross spinner listing suggests going half a size up from his usual size.

No information at all? Lower the risk
An adjustable open band forgives a small miss. The listing for our adjustable dragon ring recommends sizes 8 to 12 and small adjustments only — about half a size.

If the size still comes out wrong, many solid bands can be resized; our ring resizing guide explains which rings can and can't be.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is a size 9 ring small for a man?
In our orders, yes, a little. Size 9 sits below our median of 10.5, and 29.0% of the 16,023 rings customers kept were size 9 or smaller. Brilliant Earth's men's chart puts the average between 9 and 10, so a 9 is far from unusual. Measure before you assume.
Is a size 13 ring big for a man?
It is on the larger side but common. In our 16,023 sized ring orders, 23.3% were size 13 or larger, so nearly one ring in four was a 13 or above. A 13 is not an outlier for our customers, though it is worth measuring before you order one as a gift.
What ring size should I buy if I can't ask him?
With nothing to go on, US 10.5 is the median in our orders and 11 the most-ordered size, but if you can, measure a ring the person already wears first. Exactly 10.5 covered only 6.0% of the 16,023 rings, so an adjustable open band, or a store that resizes, cuts the risk of a wrong guess.
