Face Size Is the Number to Read First
The face is the part of the ring that sits on top of your finger: its width across the finger and its length running toward the knuckle. Our two pavé skulls, the iced-out Bling Women's Skull Ring and the black-crystal Lady Skull Ring, both measure 22 mm by 28 mm. A standard US chart puts the inside diameter of a size 6 ring at about 16.5 mm, which is close to the width of the finger it sits on. A 22 mm face is wider than that, so on a size 6 it reaches past the edges of the finger, which is what the photo below shows.
Both rings are built around that overhang; it is the look, not an accident of fit. The bling ring is also the page most people searching for skull rings for women land on first, so it is the one to measure yourself against. On a size 5 finger the difference is bigger still.

The table can't show height. The coffin locket ring adds about 10 mm above the finger, the Claw Devil Ring's talons stand 8 to 10 mm proud of the band, and the skull-and-rose signet is 9 mm tall but only 12 mm wide. Width is what other people see. Height is what you are more likely to notice yourself, closing your hand around a phone or a handlebar.
Which Skull Rings Come in Size 5 and 6?
Two designs are cut down to size 5: the Skull Wedding Ring and the Garnet Bone Ring. The Claw Devil Ring starts at 5.5. Size 6 opens up the Skull Engagement Ring, the flame and spider skull-and-crossbones rings and two of the skull spinners. At 6.25 you get the Bling ring, the Santa Muerte band and the skeleton hand ring. The black-crystal Lady Skull Ring starts at 7 and the coffin locket at 7.5. Every one of them runs in half sizes, and a few are cut in quarter sizes too, which the US system allows: one half size is roughly 0.4 mm of inside diameter. Three designs take some of the size question away. The skull-and-rose signet is an open-back band that you squeeze to fit anywhere from US 6 to 10.5, and its product page is honest that it takes deliberate pressure, so pick a finger and leave it there. The Mexican Skull Ring's open shank covers 7 to 11 the same way. The skeleton hand ring wraps around and flexes about half a size. If you are buying a gift and don't know the size, those three narrow the guess, as long as her finger falls inside the listed range.
When you do know the finger, measure it with a sizer as wide as the band you are ordering. Pavé, Bezel-Set or Oxidized: What Each Finish Does on the Hand
The Bling ring and the Lady Skull Ring are pavé: dozens of small cubic zirconia set edge to edge across the cranium, each held by tiny beads or prongs of silver. Cubic zirconia sits around 8 to 8.5 on the Mohs scale, hard enough for daily wear though it can still pick up scratches. The setting is the part to watch more closely. Jewelers recommend having pavé checked now and then to make sure every stone is still tight, and we would add one thing from the black-stone wedding band: lint and soap residue collect in the gaps between paved stones, and a soft brush under warm water with a drop of mild soap clears them. That band's page suggests doing it about once a week.
A bezel takes a different approach. The Garnet Bone Ring holds its 8 mm natural garnet in a rim of silver that sits flush below the skull's brow, so the stone's edge is wrapped in metal and the garnet itself doesn't stand proud to catch a glove or a pocket lining. Garnet is softer than cubic zirconia, 6.5 to 7.5 on the same scale depending on the type, which is one reason a recessed bezel suits it. Its product page describes the stone as close to black under tungsten light and a transparent red in daylight, so look at it under both before you decide.
Oxidized silver is a finish on the metal, not a different metal. The dark colour is a thin layer of silver sulfide, produced by treating the silver with a sulfur compound such as liver of sulfur, and it lives in the recesses of the carving. So a "black skull ring" with an oxidized finish tends to drift toward silver on the ridges, while the eye sockets and grooves hold the dark longer; cleaning and wear reach those too, only more slowly. If you want the black to hold, the pavé black crystals on the Lady Skull Ring are stones set into the silver rather than a surface layer, so they don't lighten with friction the way an oxidized finish does.
Room for a Neighbour: What Stacks and What Doesn't
If you already wear a plain band on the next finger, the question is whether the skull ring's face will touch it. Four designs here keep the top profile low and close to the band. The Skull Wedding Ring keeps its skull flat against a 14 mm band. The Santa Muerte band is 12 mm wide and 8 g. None of them spread wider than the band, so a ring beside them has room; still try the pair together before you settle on a finger.
The wide faces are a different story. A 22 mm skull reaches past the finger, so a ring on the neighbouring finger can knock against it. You want the big-face look on a small hand
The Bling ring at 6.25 gives you the 22 × 28 mm face; expect it to overhang the finger on both sides, because that is the design. If you would rather the skull stayed closer to the finger's width, the 12 mm signet or the 14 mm band comes nearer to it.
You type all day, wear gloves or live in knitwear
Keep the face low: the Santa Muerte band, a spinner, the wedding band or the signet. Skip the coffin locket and the claw, and know that the Lady Skull Ring's own page warns its 28 mm face catches on sleeves and cuffs for the first week.
It's a gift and you don't know her size
The Skull and Rose signet adjusts from 6 to 10.5 and the Mexican Skull Ring from 7 to 11. Both are open-shank bands you squeeze to fit once, and neither needs a jeweler unless the listed range doesn't reach her size.
