Phantom Skull Red Stingray Hand-Carved Leather Biker Wallet
SKU: 2539
Red stingray leather fills the skull's forehead and cheeks, glowing through the carved teeth like something burning inside the bone. The stingray's natural pearl sits in the left eye socket — a pale white-pink dot against the deep red grain. Everything around the skull is hand-carved black cowhide: floral scrollwork, stippled backgrounds, and leaf patterns cut deep enough to cast shadows. The back is the same — a large flower medallion surrounded by dense scrollwork, all black on black with silver-gray highlights from the carving depth.
Built For
If you collect skull wallets — This isn't a printed or stamped skull. The outline is hand-carved into the leather, and red stingray panels are inlaid into each section of the face separately — forehead, cheeks, jaw gaps. The pearl placement in the eye socket is natural, not added after.
If you ride and chain your wallet — The .925 sterling silver grommet handles heavy chain weight without warping. At 4" × 8" closed, it sits in a back pocket or jacket liner without folding over. The silver snap holds firm under road vibration.
If you want carving on every surface — Front: skull with stingray inlay and floral surround. Back: full floral medallion. Closure strap: carved scrollwork. Even the edges have white contrast stitching framing everything. There's no blank leather anywhere on the exterior.
The Honest Take
The carving has a two-tone quality you can only see up close. Where the tools cut deep into the black cowhide, the exposed layer shows a silver-gray tone — it's not paint, it's the natural leather underneath the black dye. This gives the floral patterns a metallic shimmer that photographs don't fully capture.
The red stingray sections feel completely different from the carved cowhide. Stingray is pebbly and rough — almost like very fine sandpaper. The carved areas are smoother, waxy from the tooling process. Your thumb can trace the skull outline just by the texture change where one leather meets the other.
Heads up: The stingray inlay panels sit slightly higher than the carved cowhide around them — that's what creates the 3D skull effect. But it also means the front isn't flat. In a tight jeans pocket, you'll feel every contour. Works better chained to your belt or in a jacket pocket where it has room.
Under the Hood
Before You Buy
Q: How is the skull design made — is the red stingray one piece or multiple?
Multiple separate pieces. The forehead, each cheek, and the jaw gaps are individual stingray panels cut and inlaid independently into the carved cowhide. That's why the skull has depth — each section sits at a slightly different height.
Q: Is the stingray pearl placed intentionally in the eye socket?
The craftsman positions the stingray panel so the natural pearl falls in or near the eye socket — it's intentional. But since each stingray hide has its pearl in a slightly different spot, the exact placement varies wallet to wallet. The pearl is always visible on the skull face.
Q: What's the silver-gray color in the carving — is that paint?
No paint. The black cowhide is dyed on the surface. When the carving tools cut deep enough, they expose the natural leather color underneath — a lighter gray-silver tone. It's the leather itself, which is why it won't flake or peel off.
Q: Is the grommet sterling silver or plated?
The grommet is solid .925 sterling silver — not plated, so it won't wear through at the chain point the way coated hardware does. It will develop a patina over time that you can polish back or leave as is. The snap closure, by contrast, is silver-plated rather than solid.
