Johnny Depp Jewelry and Tattoos: The Connections Nobody Maps

After breakups, Johnny Depp has edited two tattoos by changing a letter or two, three times in all. "Winona Forever" became "Wino Forever." "Slim" became "Scum," then "Scam."

Johnny Depp's jewelry can be read the same way. Some of his rings connect to something already written on him, and this post maps the ones we could document: the club ring and the tattoo planned with it, what the number 3 means to him, and the rings of his own that ended up on Jack Sparrow. Where a connection is our reading and not something he has said, we say so.

The Death Is Certain Club — Four Rings, Four Friends

In the early 1990s, tattoo artist and novelist Jonathan Shaw brought Depp, musician Iggy Pop and filmmaker Jim Jarmusch into C'est Magnifique, the Albrizio family's jewelry shop in New York, looking for a ring they could all wear. That is the family's account; Shaw's own version is that he already wore a skull ring and the others wanted one like it.

Jarmusch picked a medium flat-top skull off the shelf, a design the family dates to the late 1970s, and Alfred Albrizio still makes it as the Jim Skull. All four wore that ring, and they called themselves the Death Is Certain Club. Matching rings marked the friendship.

The red-eyed ring linked to Depp is harder to pin down. A 2022 Something About Rocks feature calls it Depp's Death is Certain ring, credits it to Alfred Albrizio and describes a boxy skull with red gems for eyes, three clear stones in the forehead, a gold 3 and a question mark it links to The Brave, the 1997 film he directed. The same feature says the ring Depp first bought with the others was plain silver, and none of these sources says when the red eyes and gold symbols came in. The tattoo came out of the same pact. Going through Shaw's antique tattoo design sheets, Iggy found a skull and crossbones ringed by the words "death is certain," and the idea was that all four would get it. By Shaw's account they did, except Iggy: "Iggy got the ring, but he never got the tattoo." One idea, worn in ink and in silver.

Tattoos He Rewrote — And What That Says About His Style

Most people cover up regrettable tattoos. Depp edits them. Two tattoos, three documented changes:

He didn't erase these two. He rewrote them, and the old story stays visible under the new word, like a palimpsest. His jewelry builds up the same way: bracelets stack, necklaces layer, rings accumulate. Depp uses the journal image himself. Talking about his tattoos with Larry King in 2011, he called them "like a journal" and said "every single one means something."

Why the Number 3 Shows Up Everywhere

Depp has the number 3 tattooed on his hand, and he has been quoted explaining it: "Three is a sort of special number for me. It's a very creative number. Triangle, trinity - you know, two people make another person. Three is a mystical, magical number."

His Own Rings on a Movie Set — What He Lent Jack Sparrow

Some of Jack Sparrow's rings came out of Depp's own collection. GQ Taiwan reported in 2022 that he lent Sparrow several of his rings, and costume designer Penny Rose described the routine in the production notes for Dead Men Tell No Tales: "Sometimes Johnny will come in and hand me a new ring he likes, and we then have to replicate it in plastic."

The same GQ Taiwan feature names two of the loans. The skull ring set with an emerald on Sparrow's index finger was an early piece of Depp's, one he had worn on a 1989 Rolling Stone cover. The gold onyx ring with three small stones and a flower pattern was his too. One ring went the other way: the big amethyst ring Sparrow often wore became Depp's own, and he has been photographed in it since. The popular story of an antique amethyst stolen from the set and remade mid-shoot traces back to fan pages and shops; we couldn't find a production source for it.

That's why the rings on screen look lived-in: the originals carried years of real wear before a costume team copied them. It's why a well-worn sterling silver skull ring always looks better than a freshly cast replica — time is part of the design.

The Keith Richards Pipeline

Depp has said he drew on Keith Richards when he built Jack Sparrow, and the producers took the hint: Richards played Sparrow's father, Captain Teague, in Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End (2007) and again in On Stranger Tides (2011). Both men are known for a silver skull ring.

Richards has worn his skull ring since 1978, when London goldsmiths David Courts and Bill Hackett gave it to him for his birthday. It's a different design from Depp's, and he explained it plainly to Rolling Stone in 1988: the ring "is to remind me that we're all the same under the skin." His First Tattoo — and the Heritage Question

Depp dates the habit to 17. "It started when I was 17 I got my first tattoo," he told Larry King in 2011. Among his tattoos is the profile of a Native American chief.

He has also claimed Native ancestry: Cherokee, he said on Inside the Actors Studio in 2002, "or maybe Creek," he told Entertainment Weekly in 2011. When he played Tonto in The Lone Ranger in 2013, Indian Country Today quoted Native educators and a Cherokee Nation policy analyst who questioned the claim. We've found no documentation for it, so we don't treat it as fact here.

Our reading, not something Depp has said: the tattoos he has changed are the ones tied to relationships that ended. That's a useful split if you're pairing jewelry with ink — anchor the pieces you'll keep for decades to the things that won't change.

Still Adding Ink in His Sixties

Depp didn't stop tattooing after the trial. As he left Argentina in February 2025, Infobae reported that he and his friend Jorge "Corcho" Rodríguez had the same line tattooed on their forearms by artist Nat Cekauskas, and that each man wrote the other's. It opens "Yo tengo un arma" ("I have a weapon") and describes a creative, emotional weapon that will always be on the side of those who need it most. Cekauskas later told Para Ti that her first session with Depp was in Punta del Este, Uruguay. In November 2025 she tattooed him again at Rodríguez's home in Buenos Aires, including Deadman, a character Rodríguez created.

The rings keep coming too. If you want his layered look without going all-massive, pair heavier gothic-style rings with slimmer bands. The tattoos get added. The jewelry adapts. The conversation between ink and silver keeps going.

How to Apply This to Your Own Collection

You don't need a full sleeve or a Hollywood budget. The principle is simpler than people make it:
